Why is it important to know what tension my process runs? | |

As a machinery builder, we always ask our customers questions to understand their process. Many of these specifications are dimensions, such as width (range), maximum roll diameter and core size. We may ask your maximum material roll weight. All of these specifications are basic and relatively easy to attain. Really, all you need is a tape measure and possibly a weight scale to understand this information. One question we almost always ask is “What tension range (minimum to maximum) do you run”. This specification is often difficult to receive from our customers because it is not something that can be measured with a standard device (like a tape measure or weight scale). However, this specification is important to know because it effects every area of a continuous web process. Equipment that will be effected by web tension includes:
Brakes, clutches and drives are directly affected by web tension. Their size, design and price depends on what tension they need to deliver to the web. Rollers are affected by web tension because they must be designed properly to rotate and stay in traction with your web. There are many types of anti-wrinkle devices to choose from and many times tension is a deciding factor as to what is the best type for your application. Process equipment must be designed to operate within the required tension range. Air shafts and chucks must be designed to hold the roll core, without slippage, through the full torque requirement, which is determined knowing web tension.
