What type of brake should I use on my unwind?

Air brakes are better suited for high speed, high torque applications. They have very high heat dissipation capability.

Magnetic particle brakes are extremely well suited for low speed, low torque applications where you need very accurate tension control. Magnetic particle brakes are lacking in heat dissipation, so they are not well suited for high speed, high torque applications. Their almost straight torque curve is great for applications demanding very accurate tension control.

Sometimes driving your unwind stand is the best option. Drive systems can be designed to handle high speed, high torque and highly accurate tension control requirements. Driving your unwind is probably the most expensive method of controlling tension off your unwind.
