TECH TIP FOR THE WEEK OF February 8, 2010

Unwind stands and rewind stands

Unwind stands and rewind stands are often purchased as ancillary equipment to existing converting processes. There may be several reasons why unwind and/or rewind stations may be added to processes, including technology upgrades, process changes and additions, capacity upgrades or possibly just the need for automation.

Whenever unwind and rewind equipment is added to a converting operation it must be aligned to the process equipment. Proper alignment is critical to ensure the web enters the process correctly and without defect at the unwind location and to ensure rolls are wound with the highest possible quality.

We always recommend that unwind stands and rewind stands are manufactured to mount permanently to the floor. Mounting must be rigid and include leveling pads to assist in machine alignment. Designing and manufacturing unwind and rewind equipment to be portable is never recommended. Portability features will detract from the rigid nature required to ensure proper alignment to the converting process is maintained.
