Standard Vs Custom unwind / rewind systems

If you are considering an unwind / rewind machine, either as a stand-alone unit for inspection, for example, or to facilitate a process like slitting, coating, laminating or others, it may be best to consider standard "off-the-shelf" machines first. This may sound like common sense. However, I have often spoken with individuals seeking an unwind / rewind system who believe they must purchase a custom-built piece of equipment. Before considering the custom route, it is best to exhaust options that are standard and therefore have previously been designed. These standard options may be from a new machinery builder or possibly used equipment.

Generally speaking, custom equipment is more expensive with longer lead-times than standard. After all, how can a custom machine be designed for less and faster than a machine that is already designed and possible sitting on the floor?

Don’t get me wrong, there are many applications that require custom manufactured unwind / rewind equipment. You may have a special process, or you may be working with materials that require special consideration and attention that are outside the capability scope of cookie cutter unwind / rewind systems. The special nature of your application may simply preclude you from considering standard or used equipment. In this case custom built is the only choice.
