Shear type slitting incorporates a top knife assembly, which usually incorporates a dish blade side loaded against a thicker bottom knife assembly, which is usually driven. Shear slitting is accomplished by the top knife assembly being actuated downward, then sideways to engage the bottom knife with some amount of side pressure. The cutting depth or amount of overlap of the top knife to the bottom knife is key in any slitting operation. This cutting depth must be deep enough to properly slit your web and always prevent knife jump (when the top knife blade "jumps" from the side load position to riding on top of the bottom knife). However, excessive cutting depth will reduce blade life, cause a lot of slitting dust and possibly distort the slit edge of your web.
Bottom line - you should determine and document the optimum cutting depth for your shear slitting operation. This cutting depth should be the least amount necessary to properly slit your web.
