Web to roller traction is important. | |
Your web is not in traction with rollers when air entrainment causes your web to "float" over idler rollers. Generally, this problem shows itself in high speed applications where nonporous webs (most films for example) are processed. Roughening the surface of rollers will help to keep webs in traction. A roughened surface helps the air to escape from between the webs surface and the rollers face. Plasma coating helps to roughen surfaces and can be a high traction coating further helping with web traction. Simply machining a light knurl or groove in the rollers surface will eliminate most air entrainment problems. Rubber covering rollers with a rough grind to the rubber surface will help to keep your web in traction. Keep in mind, no matter how you get there; it is very important to keep webs in traction with rollers in almost any converting operation.
