Do you Score Slit?

Score slitting is accomplished by loading a round scoring knife blade against a hardened steel anvil roll. The web is passed through, under the scoring knife blade, between the knife and the hardened steel anvil roll. The score knife blade(s) are loaded with air or other mechanical means with enough force to either score your web or to slit completely through your web.

Eventually, the hardened steel anvil roll, itself, may become scored. Grooves may form in the anvil roll over time from the score blades cutting against the rolls face. This degradation of the anvil roll face will cause defects in your slit and may cause frequent wear or damage to your slitting blades.

You may be able to have your hardened steel anvil roll's surface ground to remove the grooves. However, keep in mind, the hardened depth from the rollers surface may eventually be removed from repeated grinding and you may start to see the score grooves appear more frequently. This is because by grinding the outside diameter of the roller you may be removing the hardened surface and your score blades will be loaded against softer steel.

You may have to replace the hardened steel anvil roll to improve your slitting process. Typically these rolls are manufactured with a support roller and hardened steel anvil sleeve(s) mounted on top of that support roller. This type of construction allows for replacement of the sleeves, when necessary, instead of replacement of the whole roll.
